BRIGHT-UP is the Biomedical Research Internship for Growth of High school Trainees from Underrepresented Population. It offers high school students from underrepresented groups an opportunity to explore medical and health sciences as a career through a paid internship, providing hands on experience and professional guidance.
The program is a minimum wage paid internship that takes place over the course of several weeks in the summer and will require a commitment of at least around 30 hours per week. Below is a general schedule of what to expect during your time in the program:
- 1-week of orientation with lectures and hands-on training in Biomedical Research
- 6-week internship in biomedical research lab at the University of Washington. You will work with scientists to develop a project using specialized research techniques
- Weekly career development meetings.
- Closing symposium at the end in which you will share your results with your peers and the UW community
The program is offered to students that meet the following:

- 9th – 12th grade student
- First generation student (first in your family attending high school OR first that would be going to college)
- From financial or educationally disadvantage background
- Able to commit 30-40 hours per week for the entire duration of the program
